What’s this year got in store for talent management?

Recruiting for someone with very specific qualifications and a prescribed set of skills is due to continue to be tricky this year. So, being able to spot real potential alongside skills will be crucial. If someone has 6 out of the 10 things that you are searching for and 4 additional signs of potential and further skills, then they may well be a sensible hire.

Coaching your leadership teams to support growth and to be confident in upskilling those new team members in key areas of your business, will be a good way to harness talent. Highlighting and adapting the skills that they have and can bring to the team alongside company CPD is a good balance.

It is still the case that there is a lot of weight placed on specific qualifications and grades – and while it’s a solid benchmark for understanding a candidates capability to achieve academically & their subject knowledge, there is a chance this year to get ahead of the curve in terms of taking on candidates with perhaps less of an academic background but who do have experience, potential and the drive to grow.

What actual skills and experience does the candidate have that could bring true benefits to the team? It may be that they weren’t on your list but could hugely enhance the team. Even if it’s outside of the box, it’s important to have that in mind this year.

To be able to embrace this change, you may need to assess and adapt the way you advertise, shortlist, interview and assess applicants – but it’s very worthwhile considering making these changes as you start to recruit for this coming year.
